When Drug Treatment Programs (Opioid Treatment Programs – OTP) are densely located in a few districts (see data here), one unavoidable outcome is that these treatment programs are placed too close to schools and playgrounds. We plotted the drug treatment programs in NYC and overlap with the location of schools.
It is a common practice to restrict certain adult only social institutions away from schools, playgrounds and faith based organizations. For example, in NYC, liquor stores cannot be placed within 200 feet from schools. So we ask why New York State Office of Addiction Services and Support believes it is fine to place drug treatment programs so close to our schools?
